{slider [yjsgfa name="fa fa-play-circle-o"] Introduction to Softease and Diamond Head Pakula Lures (1997 to 2007) |closed}
The current materials used in our heads was developed in celebration of our 10th Anniversary in 1996. We spent many months developing, refining, testing and finally introducing our new range of lures. In keeping with our commitment to improvement, every lure in our range was evaluated and redesigned, resulting in the series of shapes called -UPGRADE- We have also introduced a few new lures.
Although we have enjoyed accelerating success since the introduction of our first lures, we have never sat back and let the competition catch up. It takes a lot of determination, not to mention many hours to improve our best performers and a great deal of finance. We have consistently proven the results of this labour are worthwhile. As all the shapes were so new we thought it time our lures were made out of current materials, so we went to companies at the cutting edge of plastics developments in the aeronautic, space, medical and electronics fields. Thanks to their help and patience we experimented with many different materials resulting in two quite incredible new formulas, one soft and the other hard, that were specifically designed for us, as we still wanted to produce our lures in house. Pakula Tackle has always led the way with shapes, colours and materials. The family tree began with solid coloured flexible heads, in fact we even made our own tapered 'slap skirts' for them. Then came clear flexible heads, with flexible insert that we have used ever since. The only one of these we can trace, now yellowed with age, is in Ian Miller's collection. These lures were great, but at the time the Durethane used for the heads was too thick to use in any type of production and the fumes were very toxic. This heralded the next stage of lures that strangely enough were made to look as much like our flexible heads as possible, but in a hard material. Pakula Lure heads were made in Polyester Resin ever since. First with cut flat skirts and then Yo-Zuri skirts for many years, until early 1995 when they changed manufacturer and the quality and supply deteriorated. We then developed a range of customised skirts with Sevenstrand, USA, to suit our lures. Though we have continuously upgraded our products the current changes have been so monumental in such a short time that they are indeed a revolution. As they were based on our previous products they are also part of an evolution. It is thus fitting that the term "EVOLUTION REVOLUTION is applied to this stage of our history. One of the results of using upgraded materials made to our requirements is the reintroduction of clear flexible heads using the modified -UPGRADE- head shapes. The flexible heads look similar to our accepted range of hard except that they are clearer and shinier. It is unlikely you'll pick them apart unless you squeeze them! Although there are lures available in a similar look, there are none that are as shiny, strong, elastic and abrasion resistant as the original Pakula Lures. In fact many opposition soft heads crumble as easily as cheese and quite sticky. So there is no confusion with these lures we have called this range of lures SOFTease. Pakula SOFTease are not spongy and in fact are just soft enough to feel natural. The slick polishedsurface of these lures allows the angler to pull thehead of the lure through the fish's mouth to set the hooks. Normal spongy soft lures allow the fish too much grip on the lure head so that the angler cannotapply enough pressure to pull the lure through the fish's mouth to successfully hook up. The benefits of Pakula SOFTease, apart from the obvious natural feel to both you and the fish, is that they are lighter than normal hard heads and have a much easier and more aggressive action in the water. Because they are soft there is no more chipping of lure edges and boat transoms. Special UV stabilisation means the lure will last a very long time, and no matter how scuffed and dirty the lure gets the finish can be restored using a soft brush with warm soapy water. The Pakula SOFTease have such a tough, slick skin on them that you'll find it hard to find any Marlin bill marks on them, even after being hit a few times. When you get to see and feel SOFTease you'll have a pleasing smile, knowing that you have in your hands a weapon you can use with total confidence having the absolute best chance of success. During our experimentation for our new range of SOFTease we we we came across a material that is so clear, and tough we just had to use it for our new range of lure heads. The manufacturers have modified the mix and included UV stabilisers so that we now can offer you the toughest, clearest hard head on the market. So clear that we will only be producing them un-tinted. We have aptly named these the Pakula "Diamond Head Series" We have belted these with hammers and broken the bricks underneath them without even scratching the lure heads! We are actually quite worried that they may damage your props. In fact I'll state right here that we will not be liable for any damage caused by these lure heads! We closed the polyester manufacturing section and opened a new SOFTease and Diamond Head section while modifying every lure in the Pakula Range and produced over two hundred moulds. This was achieved without missing one delivery date on any orders. Nothing in the old division applies to the new, except for the fact that we still do it all ourselves. We are quite proud of this accomplishment and the results of our new lures. This is all part of our commitment to you, to give you the best chance of success we can. |

Tiny Pakula Softease®and Diamond Head™ Lures (1997 to 2007)
Pakula Uzi® |
This tiny five and a half inch lure was a way of using up left over material when pouring normal sized heads and the remaining 6" clone skirts as we no longer market that series of lures. Though we put the same effort into this lures development as we do with all of them we did not expect such a small lure to excel so quickly as a tournament winner. The Uzi is a tiny version of the very successful Pakula Zipper. Though we thought this lure would be great for small tuna, mackerel, bonito, kingfish etc, we did not expect it to do as well as it has in catching marlin up to 300kg!!. Within a month of it's release the UZI had won the Cairns Light Tackle Tournament, The Ribbons Light Tackle and has been used in winning The Frazer Coast and the Gold Coast Bluewater Tournaments. The Uzi has been in such high demand since its introduction we have had Sevenstrand make us special skirts just for this lure. In fact the colour range is even more extensive than those available for our larger lures. This lure has certainly excelled to such an extent many anglers actually stop using it at times because they have to stop every 100 yards to pull in the fish!!! Rigged with the the specific UZI rig the lure can successfully run on tackle as light as 3kg. |
Pakula Fluzi® |
The Fluzi was developed to provide a compleate pattern of these very effective tiny lures. The Fluzi is great in rough weather in any position, but is primarily a short position lure for the Short Corner and Short Rigger positions. |
Pakula Sprockie™ |
The Sprockie was also developed to provide a compleate pattern of these very effective tiny lures. The Sprockie is primarily a long position lure for the Long Corner and Long Rigger positions. |

Extra Small Softease and Diamond Head Pakula Lures (1997 to 2007)
Pakula Tackle now offer the first truly comprehensive range of Ultra Light Tackle game fishing lures. Though you can run these on tackle as light as 4kg, they are by no means small fish lures, in fact Marlin over 150kg are not uncommon on these lures. It is important to note that as with all Pakula Lures the head shapes are continuously being modified. Indeed the only thing that has remained the same is their names and colours. The older lures ran can only be a reference to the increased performance of these evolving head shapes. The individual characteristics of each lure is as follows |
Pakula Micro Cockroach® |

Even when fishing heavy tackle it is worthwhile trolling a small lure in amongst the larger sizes, especially in the shot gun position. As you can see this range of lures gives you a selection of lures that will adequately meet your trolling requirements. Choose from our huge range of colour combinations and set up a truly special set of Extra Small Pakula lures, but beware big fish do like them, though they're small you may wish to run them on medium or even heavy tackle. That way you'll get to keep them a little longer! |
{slider [yjsgfa name="fa fa-play-circle-o"] Small Softease and Diamond Head Pakula Lures (1997 to 2007)}
Small Softease and Diamond Head Pakula Lures (1997 to 2007)
The range of Small Pakula Lures include the totally updated version of the mighty little Cockroach®, one of the most productive lures to ever troll the seven seas. As with all our lures we have modified all the lures in this size to give you a comprehensive range of small lures for light tackle game fishing on tackle as light as 6kg. Do not underestimate their capabilities, they are just as useful trolling the wide canyons on heavy tackle as part of a spread of larger lures as they are on the light tackle grounds for Sailfish and smaller Marlin. Apart from their inherent action and ease of use, these lures are the size of most small schooling baitfish and therefore more likely to match the hatch. To improve your odds each lure has it's own specific action to trigger feeding responses. Match to all this the choice of Pakula skirt colours and the new SOFTease material and all you have to do is find the fish! The individual characteristics of each lure is as follows. |
Pakula Cockroach® |
The "mighty" Cockroach works well in all trolling positions. Though primarily a short rigger lure since the introduction of the rest of this range which are better in the other trolling positions. This lure has gained an enormous reputation, quite simply because it works so well! |

The Hornet with its stubby profile and shape gives the it great stability in all trolling conditions. They are particularly effective in very rough and windy conditions where the extra drag created holds the lures in position lessening worries about the lures blowing out and tangling. |
The Mini Sprocket is designed as a long rigger lure with a tight swimming action primarily for use in calm seas up to a light chop. The results on this lure have mirrored its larger brother the Lumo Sprocket which is our best tournament performer. Just make sure a Lumo stays on the long rigger. |
The Vamp is a short corner lure with a very aggressive action, it shakes and dives violently, acting as a great tiny teaser with hooks, drawing the fish in from the back of the pattern. |

There is no other set of lures that are as versatile as the range of small sized Pakula Lures! |
{slider [yjsgfa name="fa fa-play-circle-o"] Medium Softease and Diamond Head Pakula Lures (1997 to 2007)}
Medium Softease and Diamond Head Pakula Lures (1997 to 2007)
Medium Pakula Lures are the ambassadors of our range, being the first to become established in new areas. It was the Medium Sprocket that Don of Kona Fishing Tackle, Hawaii, used first and had enough success to warrant stocking Pakula Lures in his shop.
It is our recommendation that if you are fishing somewhere new, you should be using this selection of lures. They are big enough to tempt the monsters of the sea small enough to be engulfed by the smaller ones as well. As the lures increase in size they become more specific in regards to their placement in the lure pattern. It is advisable to troll these and larger lures where they have been designed to run. The individual characteristics of each lure is as follows |
Pakula Mouse® | ||||||||||
The Mouse is a short rigger lure that has no equal in this size. The most productive colours are Stripy, Fuzz and Frigate. The action is aggressive and will hug the water at all trolling speeds and will work fine in all weather conditions. This lure has maintained it's great reputation, quite simply because it works so well in this position!
Pakula Medium Sprocket® |
The Medium Sprocket was formerly known as the Small Sprocket is a long rigger lure with a tight swimming action that will work in all conditions at any trolling speed. This family of lures has been responsible for a great many of the successes of Pakula lures in fact as Peter Pakula says: "always run one of the Sprocket family in Lumo colours, and never move it!"
Pakula PatriotTM |
The Patriot is a short corner "secret weapon" it has a very aggressive action, it shakes and dives quite violently putting out more commotion and vibrations than lures twice its size attracting fish in from the back of the pattern. This lure will also work well in any position. If you are fishing in conditions so rough that you deserve to be in an asylum this lure will run well in all trolling positions even in these conditions.
Pakula Guru® |
The Guru is a long corner, long rigger and shot gun special. Its straight, tight swimming action will continue in any sea conditions at any speed. As with all lures the Guru may blow out from time to time but as Pakula Lures it will not tumble or tangle, landing perfectly every time.
Pakula ShakerTM |
The Shaker is the updated version of the original Beer Barrel. Though smaller in size this lure has indeed outperformed the original. It is the rough weather master, working in all sea conditions in all trolling positions, though it is primarily a short rigger and short corner lure. It has a violent head shake action creating maximum sonic vibrations that fish find irresistible.
Pakula Medium Beer Gut® |
The Medium Beer Gut is almost too easy to use. In any position, in any condition this lure just keeps on working with its straight, tight swimming action and narrow smoke trail. Though it's so easy to use it will produce the goods for experts as well as novices.
Pakula Deputy™ |
The Deputy is a specific teaser lure designed to kick up as much splash and turbulence as possible with minimum drag. It also has the unique characteristic of being able to be popped out of the water easily for use in bait and switch. These lures are not designed as normal rigged lures, rather for covering a rigged or teaser bait. It will perform well as a rigged lure in very calm conditions.

Large Softease and Diamond Head Pakula Lures (1997 to 2007)
These modified Pakula Lures would need their own catalogue to give you all the information on the great success that their predecessors have achieved. Even though there was nothing wrong with these lures before the upgrade and it was certainly a challenge to better them, particularly the flagship of our range the Lumo Sprocket. These changes have made all the lures more aggressive and even more 'pattern compatible'. When these lures are run in their specified positions you'll find them very easy to run together, regardless of trolling speed or sea conditions. Even more than position specific, our statistics show that each lure is also best in a limited range of colours in these positions. The individual characteristics of each lure is as follows. |
The Rat is the short rigger lure. The action is an aggressive swimming with a wide head shake and great splash when it breathes. It will hug the water at all trolling speeds and will work fine in all weather conditions. This lure works for all larger game fish. The Rat is a Striped and Black Marlin favorite. The Frigate Rat is now the "standard lure" in St Thomas and the Bahamas.
The Sprocket is the long rigger lure, particularly in the colours Lumo, Express or Dorado. If you are only ever going to take one piece of advice from us then let it be "Run the Lumo Sprocket on the long rigger, and leave it there!" Around half of all the successes on Pakula Lures are with this lure in this position. It may not catch fish for a while, but when it starts working nothing else will come close. Its tight swimming action works in all conditions at any trolling speed. It is totally irresistible.
The Chatterbox is one of our newer lures designed as short corner lure with as much action and turbulence as possible, while still being easy to use. This lure takes some getting used to as your rod tip will bounce around as if you were trolling a live bait with something spooking it. When it's too rough to troll your standard pattern of lures the Chatterbox will work well in all positions.
The Bagwan is a specific long corner lure. The action is tight, with a long bubble trail. It is our shallow diver, spending more time at the surface than our other shapes. Try it in the colour Blue Hawaii! The Bagwan is a very stable lure that maintains its action regardless of conditions and positioning.
The Pacemaker is the updated version of the original Semi Sattelite. It is the rough weather master, working in all sea conditions in all trolling positions, though it is primarily a short rigger and short corner lure. It has a violent head shake action creating maximum sonic vibrations that fish find irresistible.
The Beer Gut is almost too easy to use. In any position, in any condition this lure just keeps on working with its straight, tight swimming action and narrow smoke trail. Though it's so easy to use it will produce the goods for experts as well as novices.
This is the 10th version of the original Pakula Lure that made Pakula Lures synonymous with success. The Beer Barrel will work in any position in any condition but is best on the Short Rigger. Even though it's a historic shape it still catches it's fair share of fish.
The Sheriff is a specific teaser lure designed to kick up as much splash and turbulence as possible with minimum drag. It also has the unique characteristic of being able to be popped out of the water easily for use in bait and switch. These lures are not designed as normal rigged lures, rather for covering a rigged or teaser bait. The Sheriff will perform well as a rigged lure in very calm conditions.
Once you try this set of tournament lures on medium or heavy tackle it is unlikely you will ever go back to using any other lures. These are the lures that have won over half the major prizes on Pakula Lures. |
{slider [yjsgfa name="fa fa-play-circle-o"] Extra Large Softease and Diamond Head Pakula Lures (1997 to 2007)}
Extra Large Softease and Diamond Head Pakula Lures (1997 to 2007)
These lures are the heavy tackle beasts. Though you may be able to run them on 24kg you're better off relegating them to 37 and 60kg. As with all our other lures these have increased significantly in size in the continual upgrading process. These were the first lures tested in the new shape and material combinations in 1997. Their improved performance and fish catching abilities gave us the confidence to convert the whole range to upgraded shapes in both SOFTease and Diamond Heads. Although these lures have been designed as a set with specific positions, we recommend that for general heavy tackle trolling you use this sized lure on the short and long corners and use the Sprocket and Rat on the riggers. In certain situations using 60kg tackle. You may only troll two lures on the riggers, on these we recommend the Animal and Wombat. Compared to the smaller Pakula Lures these are all very aggressive lures with a very pronounced swimming and diving action. They are, as all Pakula Lures, finely balanced tools. The heavier and longer the leader, the more impeded the action of these lures will be. We recommend 400lb at a maximum of 18' for best results. The individual characteristics of each lure is as follows |
Pakula Wombat™ |
The Wombat is the short rigger lure. The action is an aggressive swimming with a very wide head shake and great splash when it breathes then diving quite deep carrying with it a huge smoke trail. It will hug the water at all trolling speeds and will work fine in all weather conditions.
The Animal has gained its reputation on the long corner. It has however, been redesigned as a long rigger lure. Its realistic head shaking swimming action and long bubble trail are a real pleasure to watch. When run on the long rigger Lumo colour combinations such as Lumo, Express and Dorado. If you use the Animal as a long corner lure then use blue colour combinations including Evil, Blue Hawaii and Lilac. |
The Bremilo is our short corner lure. This is the "THE BEAST" of the Pakula Lure range specifically designed for the short corner with maximum action, vibration and turbulence. We do not know of any other lure on the market that looks like a large live bait in so much trouble. When you see this lure working in your pattern you will expect it to be taken. The best colours in this lure are black, purple and Scad combinations. |
The Smoking Jo, is our extra large long corner lure. This lure that evolved from a cross between the old Smoking Jo and Warlord. It has an impressive tight continuous action and long turbulent smoke trail. We have noticed that the statistics on this range of lures known as the Long Shots, have performed particularly well in in blue colour combinations. The exception to that is the Smoking Jo in the colour Kona which has become one of the best producing lure of all time for large Striped Marlin in New Zealand waters. |
The Marshall resulted from a demand demand for saltwater Fly Fishermen for an effective low drag teaser. Their action is quite different from all the other Pakula Lures. Their action is that of a Scaly Mackerel rigged as a skip bait. Their action was good enough to fool not only the Black Marlin in Cairns, but quite a number of Skippers viewing them from other boats as well. The lure skips on the surface most of the time and when it dives for various periods it does the "Scaley Shuffle" before hitting the surface to skip again. The commotion kicked up by this lure is amazing for their relative sizes. |
Although all the above lures have been designed with specific positions in mind, they work fine in any of them. It should be remembered that the larger and more aggressive the lure the closer to the transom of the boat it should be run. The performance of these lures will get your adrenalin going even before they get a strike! |
