Pakula Hook Outs

It's not until you have, or witness a serious accident trying to get large hooks out of active fish that the need for reliable easy to use tools to remove hooks with greater safety becomes apparent. That was certainly the case with Peter Pakula who had gone many decades without mishap removing hooks from active game fish, but early in 2013 he miscalculated a marlin's movement and ended up with one hook in the fish and the other through a finger. Luckily through the fast action of the crew there was no serious damage, but the incident could have easily turned very nasty.

As a result Peter quickly set to work designing the 'Pakula Hook Outs' comprising of two tools that can be used individually to get hooks out using single hook rigs and as a pair if using twin hook rigs.

Code: PHO300

Specifications:

  • Non magnetic stainless steel.
  • Sand blasted finish for extra grip.
  • Handle made from 3 x 150mm tubing for extra grip and positive control.
  • Wrist strap to prevent dropping the tool into the depths. Note that the strap is sewn so that if the tool is tangled in the rig or leader the strap will break off so there are no wrist injuries.
  • The Pakula Hook Out 300 has an offset 5mm plate with angled hook push and hook pull slots. The offset angle makes using the tool easier in hard to get to hooks.

  • The Pakula Hook Out 500 also has a fully welded hook holder tube made from 3mm tubing. The tube is used to hold the point of any free swinging hooks to make it safer to get the second hook out of the fish. The tube can also be used to deploy a bill rope. (Video to come).

Using The Pakula Hook Outs

Scenario 1 - Single Hook Rig

You have a lively fish next to the boat and you want to get the hooks out to release the fish.

You can use either tool to remove single hooks. Get the hook in either slot depending on whether you need to pull or push the hook out. As you push or pull you need to 'give' a little on the leader so you are not pushing or pulling against the fish's weight and not the leader.

Scenario 2 - Twin Hook Rig

You have a lively fish next to the boat and you want to get the hooks out to release the fish.

If both hooks are in the fish, use the Pakula Hook Out 500 to remove the hardest hook to get to first. First, hold the point of the free hook in the Hook Holder Tube. Then use the 300 to remove the second hook.

As with the single hook, as you push or pull you need to 'give' a little on the leader so you are not pushing or pulling against the fish's weight and not the leader.

Scenario 3 - Gaffed Fish

You have a lively fish next to the boat that you have gaffed and you want to get the hooks out.

This is very dangerous and where most accidents happen. It's your call as to whether it's safe enough to remove the hooks, but we strongly suggest leaving the hooks in until the fish has need dispatched and even then great care should be taken, especially with species such as Mahi Mahi.

Warning: Removing hooks from fish is dangerous. Even though we have designed the best tool we could for the job, safety cannot be guaranteed. Please take great care.

Using Pakula Hook Out 500mm Pole with a Pakula Bill Rope

BRS 001   BRS 002
01: The release snooter is a length of 10 or 12mm silver rope with a sliced loop in it. The loop is bound so it's not too big and unwieldy. (All binding is with wax tape) The thinner rope is the release rope bound to the end of the loop.   02: Close up of release rope bound to main loop and covered with adhesive shrink wrap
BRS 003   BRS 004
03: Close of main loop binds    04: Form a sliding loop that's big enough to slide over the Marlin's bill by passing the mainline through the loop as shown
BRS 005   06
05: Place the loop over the angled tube on the Large Pakula Hook Out and the loop and sides should lie against the hook pull and push plate. Hold the rope in position with a light rubber band.   06: Close up of the rubber band secured in hook pull (and push) slots to hold the rope in position.
07   BRS 007
07: as in 05 Place the loop over the angled tube on the Large Pakula Hook Out and the loop and sides should lie against the hook pull and push plate. Hold the rope in position with a light rubber band.   08: as in 05 Place the loop over the angled tube on the Large Pakula Hook Out and the loop and sides should lie against the hook pull and push plate. Hold the rope in position with a light rubber band.
BRS 009   BRS 010
09: Guide the rope over the marlin, trying to get it as close to the head as possible.   10: Jerk the pole free of the rope
BRS 011   BRS 013
11: Pull on the main rope and jerk it to tighten it on the bill, and then once the fish is tied off tight use the hook outs to remove the hooks. Then lower the fish back into the water to revive it. This should all be done as quickly as possible. The end of the rope should at all times be tied off to a cleat.   12: To Release the marlin loosen off the main rope and pull the release rope to pull the loop open and release the fish.
